Why Are Seamed Stockings Making a Comeback?

The Return of the Seam

Something interesting has been happening in my hosiery sales.

For years the pattern at Quinn Lingerie was predictable. Hold-ups comfortably dominated orders, while traditional stockings appeared far less frequently in customers’ baskets. The reason was obvious: hold-ups are simple, reliable and easy to wear.

That hasn’t suddenly changed.

Hold-ups are still the most popular choice.

But recently, while reviewing hosiery orders, another pattern began to appear.

Seamed stockings are starting to climb again.

They’re still behind hold-ups — convenience is hard to beat — but the gap is narrowing. The increase isn’t dramatic, but it’s consistent enough to raise a question.

Why are customers starting to choose seamed stockings again?

What I’m Seeing in the Sales Data

Looking back through recent hosiery orders reveals a small but noticeable shift.

My pattern has historically looked like this:

Hold-ups dominate hosiery sales
Stockings appear less frequently in orders
• But recently seamed stockings are appearing more often

It isn’t a sudden surge.

But when reviewing weekly sales, the same detail keeps appearing: customers who might once have chosen hold-ups are occasionally selecting seamed stockings instead.

Most of this increase is happening within classic seam styles, particularly those produced by brands such as Dark Secret, where the seam itself is the central design feature.

That consistency suggests something more than coincidence.

Convenience vs Intention

Part of the answer lies in the difference between stockings and hold-ups.

Hold-ups are designed around convenience. The silicone band keeps them securely in place, which means they can be worn like ordinary hosiery.

Stockings are different.

They require a suspender belt.
They require the seam to be aligned.
They require a little patience.

For years that extra effort worked against them.

But the same effort also gives stockings something hold-ups don’t: intention.

They’re never accidental.

They’re chosen.

And sometimes that deliberate quality is exactly what makes a garment appealing again.

The Visual Power of the Seam

The seam itself plays a surprisingly important role.

A straight vertical line running up the back of the leg naturally draws the eye. It sharpens the silhouette and emphasises the length and shape of the leg.

With seamed stockings, that line runs uninterrupted from heel to thigh, creating a particularly striking visual effect.

Hold-ups can create a similar look, but the seam on stockings often feels more precise and more traditional.

It’s a small detail.

But it’s one people notice.

Why Modern Stockings Are Different

Another factor behind the shift may simply be product quality.

Older stockings often had a reputation for being delicate or uncomfortable. Modern hosiery has changed that significantly.

Brands such as Dark Secret now produce seamed stockings using softer stretch yarns and reinforced construction, making them far more durable and comfortable than their vintage predecessors.

The classic appearance of the seam remains.

The compromises largely do not.

Which makes stockings far easier to wear than they once were.

More Ways to Wear the Seam

Another interesting development is the range of seamed hosiery now available.

Alongside traditional seamed stockings worn with suspenders, the same visual detail can now appear in:

seamed hold-ups
seamed crotchless tights

The garment may change.

The effect does not.

A single line running up the back of the leg can completely change how the hosiery — and the outfit — is perceived.

Seeing the Seam in Practice

For anyone curious about how different seam styles change the look of the leg, exploring real examples helps.

Classic seamed stockings, modern seamed hold-ups, and decorative seam designs all create slightly different effects — but the same defining line remains.

Once you start noticing the seam, you begin to see it everywhere.

Still Behind — But Catching Up

Hold-ups remain the dominant hosiery style.

Their practicality makes them the default choice for many women.

But the steady rise in seamed stocking sales suggests something interesting is happening.

Not a rejection of hold-ups.

A rediscovery of stockings.

The seam, once dismissed as old-fashioned, suddenly feels distinctive again.

The Takeaway

Fashion shifts rarely arrive overnight.

More often they begin quietly — with small changes in what people start adding to their baskets.

Right now that small detail is the seam.

Hold-ups still lead the sales charts.

But seamed stockings are beginning to close the gap.

And judging by what I’m seeing in the orders, the return of the seam may only just be starting.
