The First Thing You Notice

Seamed stockings are stockings with a visible seam running up the back of the leg — a simple detail that changes the shape and style of hosiery completely.

The first time you see seamed stockings from behind, your eye goes straight to the line.

It runs cleanly up the back of the leg, from heel to thigh, and somehow it changes everything. Legs look longer. The silhouette looks sharper. Even simple hosiery suddenly feels deliberate.

That line is the seam — and it’s the detail that defines seamed stockings.

Where the Seam Comes From

Originally, stockings had a seam because of how they were made.

Early nylon stockings were produced as flat pieces of fabric and stitched together along the back of the leg. That join created the seam.

Later, seamless knitting made that construction unnecessary, but the look had already become iconic. Instead of disappearing, the seam stayed — now used as a design feature rather than a manufacturing necessity.

Why the Seam Works

A straight vertical line naturally draws the eye downward.

On stockings, that line creates structure. It emphasises the length of the leg and gives the whole look a more tailored shape.

It’s a simple detail, but it changes the way hosiery looks completely. Once you notice it, plain stockings can feel almost unfinished by comparison.

Not All Seamed Stockings Look the Same

While the classic version is a simple straight seam, many modern designs take the idea further.

Some styles use contrast colours so the seam stands out more clearly against the leg.

Others add decorative elements — embroidery, patterns, or shaped designs — turning the seam into a focal point rather than just a line.

Brands like Ballerina and Black Secret are known for these more elaborate seams, where the back of the stocking becomes part of the overall design.

The Appeal of the Seam

Seamed stockings are never completely subtle.

They’re meant to be noticed — especially from behind. That clean line adds definition to the leg and brings a touch of classic glamour to an otherwise simple piece of hosiery.

It’s a small detail, but it makes a remarkable difference.
