Hi Abbie, I read your recent Abbie Investigates piece and then clicked through to the crotchless tights collection. I wear tights regularly, so the idea that these might be more comfortable definitely caught my attention.
That said, the way crotchless tights are usually presented — and some of the imagery — still makes them feel quite bedroom-focused. Before I consider buying a pair, I wanted to check: are they genuinely more comfortable than normal tights in day-to-day wear, or does that not really translate in practice?”
That’s a very reasonable thing to question — especially if tights are already part of your everyday wardrobe.
Crotchless tights are almost always marketed visually as lingerie, which makes it easy to assume they’re about how they look rather than how they feel. The design itself, though, exists for a practical reason. Removing the gusset changes how tights sit on the body and how they behave over time — particularly when you’re wearing them for hours, not just for effect.
The important part is choosing the right style. The full collection does include tights that are clearly intended for the bedroom, and I wouldn’t expect anyone to instinctively know which are practical and which aren’t. That’s why I’ve put together a separate Office / Everyday edit — tights that are still thoughtfully designed, but chosen because they work under clothes rather than drawing attention to themselves.
Even those everyday styles aren’t identical to basic supermarket tights. The construction is different, and there can be subtle design details. They work best when paired with outfits you already feel secure in: knee-length or longer skirts, dresses with a bit of weight, and fabrics you’re comfortable sitting, standing, and moving in throughout the day.
In that context, the comfort difference is real but understated. You don’t feel the opening at all. What you notice instead is what isn’t there: less pulling between the legs, less heat building up, and less need to adjust as the day goes on. Over a full office day, those small things make a noticeable difference.
You can wear the everyday styles under trousers as well, but with the same common sense you’d apply to any tights. They tend to work best with looser or straight-cut trousers rather than very fitted styles. If the fabric is thin or close to the body, regular tights are usually the better option.
It’s also fair to pause over the price. These aren’t throwaway tights, and I wouldn’t expect anyone to treat them that way. They’re not ladder-proof, and fit matters. Choosing the right size — and if you’re between sizes, erring slightly up rather than down — usually leads to better comfort and longevity.
That’s also why I wouldn’t suggest buying several pairs straight away. One carefully chosen pair from the everyday edit is enough to see how they fit, how they feel, and whether they genuinely make your day easier. If they do, you’ll know. If they don’t, you haven’t overcommitted.
So yes — crotchless tights can be more comfortable than standard tights in everyday wear. But that comfort only shows up when they’re chosen thoughtfully and worn in the right context.
The mistake is judging the entire idea by its boldest imagery, rather than by the quieter styles designed to be lived in.
